Imam Abu Sad Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abdullah ibn Hafs ibn Halil al-Ansare al-Harawe al-Malini as-Sufi narrated in his book «Arbain fi shuyookh as-soofiya» with chain till Anas ibn Malik: When envoys of banu Mustalik or Muntafik separated from prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa salam), i followed them. They said to me: O Anas! Go back to prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa salam) and say: Ya rasulullah! When we separated from you, we forgot to ask, if you would die, to whom should we give zakat?». Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa salam) said: «Give it to Abu Bakr». I went back to them and said that. They asked me: «Go back and ask, if Abu Bakr would die, then to whom?» Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa salam) said: «Go back to them and say, it (should be given then) to Umar». They asked me to go back and ask, if Umar would die, then to whom? I went, and Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa salam) said: «Go back to them, and say (in this case) to Uthman».

Editor of book dr. Amir Hasen Sabri said: «Chain is hasan». And he also noticed that similar narration was transmitted by Hakeem (3/77) who said it’s saheeh, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
This hadeeth has 3 shawaheed in weak chains, from Abu Hurayra, Ismat ibn Maleek, and Sahl ibn Abe Khamsa.

[ 4460 ] أخبرنا أبو بكر أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه ببغداد ثنا جعفر بن محمد بن أبي عثمان الطيالسي ثنا نصر بن منصور المروزي ثنا بشر بن الحارث ثنا علي بن مسهر ثنا المختار بن فلفل عن أنس بن مالك قال بعثني بنو المصطلق إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا سل لنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى من ندفع صدقاتنا بعدك قال فأتيته فسألته فقال إلى أبي بكر فأتيتهم فأخبرتهم فقالوا ارجع إليه فسله فإن حدث بأبي بكر حدث فإلى من فأتيته فسألته فقال إلى عمر فأتيتهم فأخبرتهم فقالوا ارجع إليه فسله فإن حدث بعمر حدث فإلى من فأتيته فسألته فقال إلى عثمان فأتيتهم فأخبرتهم فقالوا ارجع إليه فسله فإن حدث بعثمان حدث فإلى من فأتيته فسألته فقال إن حدث بعثمان حدث فتبا لكم الدهر تبا هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد ولم يخرجاه
