Q: Regarding Umar ibn Sad and others


Q: I need to ask a question, within the shia kutb, do we find narrators (rijal) who may have been against the imams of ahl al bayt, meaning the enemies of ahl al bayt within the isnads?
Also, shias quote that Umar ibn Sa’d is within the sahih sittah and in bukhari he is within around 800 isnads. Please can I ask, did bukhari use these narratives as corraboratory (shawahid and muta’ba ah) or did he have stand alone narrations with Umar ibn Sa’d within the isnad?
Did bukhari see Umar ibn Sa’d as a just – adl, trustworthy person and was he not of the taabiun?

We can divide your question in 2 parts.

1) Nawasib (enemies of ahlalbait) in shia books.

2) Umar ibn Sad and his place in the books of ahadeth.

1) Yes, shias narrated from people which they do believe were nawasib. And nawasib are kuffar in accordance to their school.

2) Umar ibn Sad ibn Abu Waqas az-Zuhri was tabein,  a person who preferred this world to hereafter, and he was the leader of kufian army which fought against Husayn (r.a).

When imam of jarh and tadeel, Yahya ibn Maeen was asked is Umar thiqat? He answered: How is it possible for him to be thiqat, if he killed Husayn (r.a)? (Mizanul itidal 3/199).

As for shia claim that he was a narrator in sihah as-sitta, and in Bukhari he is in 800 places. Obviously that is nothing but a lie. Because when we check bio of Umar in such books like “Mizanul itidal”,”Tahzeeb at-Tahzeeb” or “Tahzeeb al-Kamal” we can see only the letter sin [ س ] next to his name. And that is mean that from author of 6 books, only Nasai alone narrated from him.

    what does that mean, they did narrate from him or they did not? you used a double negative…

  2. I have checked Nisai and there are two narrations from him, one is to do with the hadith, abusing a muslim is fisq and killing one is kufr. Nisai has other chains along with the one quoted from Umar ibn Sa’d which I shall post up later, as I am not home, but did Nasai, only add these as shawahid? I heard that Nasai stated he didnt narrate fromthose whom he considered abandoned, matruk? Then did he believe that Umar ibn Sa’d was not matruk?

    • If he had other chains along with the one which contains Umar ibn Sad, then yes, that mean he used it as shawahid.
      Second question should be researched.

  3. Yes, there is one narration where it has others along with it and there is another narration, I will copy and paste these tonight inshallah when I am home from work. The second question to do with nasai is him not mentioning narrators that were abandoned in his sunan. I have not observed this mentioned in the intro of sunan saghir. It was mentioned by kamali in his book on the intro to hadith studies. This needs to be looked into.

  4. Here are some aHaadeeth that `Umar bin Sa`ad bin Abee Waqqaas narrates in Ahmad bin Hanbal’s Musnad. According to Shu`ayb Aran’ut `Umar bin Sa`ad is sadooq (truthful), so that is the reason why his hadeeth are graded as Hasan, and not SaHeeH. Aran’ut says this about him “The men are (all) trustworthy, they are men from the saheehayn except `Umar bin Sa`ad, and he is from the men that al-Nisaa’i (narrated from), and he is sadooq” (رجاله ثقات رجال الصحيح غير عمر بن سعد، فمن رجال النسائي، وهو صدوق).

    1492 – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْعَيْزَارِ بْنِ حُرَيْثٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” عَجِبْتُ لِلمُؤْمِنِ، إِنْ أَصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ حَمِدَ اللهَ وَشَكَرَ، وَإِنِ أصَابَتْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ حَمِدَ اللهَ وَصَبَرَ، فَالْمُؤْمِنُ يُؤْجَرُ فِي كُلِّ أَمْرِهِ، حَتَّى يُؤْجَرَ فِي اللُّقْمَةِ يَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِهِ ” (1)
    Grading:

    (1) إسناده حسن. وهو في “مصنف عبد الرزاق” (20310) .

    1487 – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ الْمَعْنَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْعَيْزَارِ بْنِ حُرَيْثٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” عَجِبْتُ مِنْ قَضَاءِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِلمُؤْمِنِ، إِنِ أصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ حَمِدَ رَبَّهُ وَشَكَرَ، وَإِنِ أصَابَتْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ حَمِدَ رَبَّهُ وَصَبَرَ، الْمُؤْمِنُ يُؤْجَرُ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي اللُّقْمَةِ يَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِهِ ” (2)
    Grading:
    (2) إسناده حسن. سفيان: هو الثوري، وأبو إسحاق: هو عمرو بن عبد الله السبيعي، وقد اضطرب عليه فيه، انظر “العلل” للدارقطني 4/351-353.

    1519 – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” قِتَالُ المسلم كُفْرٌ وَسِبَابُهُ فُسُوقٌ، وَلا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ” (1)
    Grading:

    (1) إسناده حسن، والحديث صحيح. أبو إسحاق: هو عمرو بن عبد الله السبيعي.

    1531 – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْعَيْزَارِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ” عَجِبْتُ لِلمُسْلِمِ إِذَا أَصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ حَمِدَ اللهَ وَشَكَرَ، وَإِذَا أَصَابَتْهُ مُصِيبَةٌ احْتَسَبَ وَصَبَرَ، الْمُسْلِمُ يُؤْجَرُ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي اللُّقْمَةِ يَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِيهِ ” (2)
    Grading:
    (2) إسناده حسن، رجاله ثقات رجال الصحيح غير عمر بن سعد، فمن رجال النسائي، وهو صدوق. =

    There are more, but I think this is sufficient to show the his status in the eyes of Shu`ayb Aran’ut.

    Here is what al-Albaani has to say about him (Taken from his Silsalah aHaadeeth al-SaHeeHah, vol. 5, pg. 297, hadeeth # 2298).
    قلت : و هذا إسناد رجاله ثقات رجال الصحيحين غيرعمر بن سعد ، و هو صدوق .

    Sunan al-Nisaa’i:

    4104 أخبرنا إسحق بن إبراهيم قال أنبأنا عبد الرزاق قال حدثنا معمر عن أبي إسحق عن عمر بن سعد قال حدثنا سعد بن أبي وقاص أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال قتال المسلم كفر وسبابه فسوق .
    al-Albaani’s Grading:
    صحيح
