Abu Jaʿfar al-Ma’mun al-‘Abbasi (786-833 AD), the seventh Abbasid caliph, the son of a Persian concubine from modern day Afghanistan (Badghis) and Harun al-Rashid al-‘Abbasi was the ruler. Unlike Shia myths that portray all caliphs as zealous Sunnis who had nothing better to do but to praise the likes of Abu Bakr, ‘Omar, Mu’awiyah etc., al-Ma’mun was actually not a Sunni, he was the opposite of a Sunni and persecuted and oppressed them, in particular Sunni scholars.
The ‘mihna’ (trial or testing), is comparable to Medieval European inquisitions in the sense that it involved imprisonment, a religious test, and a loyalty oath. The people subject to the mihna were Sunni scholars. They were punished, imprisoned, or even killed unless they conceded the Mu’tazila doctrine of the created nature of the Qur’an (a heretical belief shared by Jahmis, Mu’tazilis and Rafidis).Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal became famous for his opposition to the mihna. Al-Ma’mun died in 833, but his policy was continued by al-Mu’tassim. In that same year the famous religious scholar Ahmad ibn Hanbal was put to the question, to which he answered that the Qu’ran was uncreated. Al-Mu’tassim removed him from his post, imprisoned him, and had him flogged until he was unconscious.
Al-Ma’mun was not just Anti-Sunni and Mu’tazili but also Pro-Shi’ite in his beliefs.
: وفي سنة إحدى عشرة أمر المأمون بأن ينادي برئت الذمة ممن ذكر معاوية بخير وأن أفضل الخلق بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علي بن أبي طالب.
And in the year 11. the chief of the believers al-Ma`mun ordered
AND IN THE YEAR 11, AL-MAMUN ORDERED THAT IT SHOULD BE PROCLAIMED: PROTECTION RISES FROM ANYONE WHO WOULD MENTION MUAWIYAH WITH GOODNESS, AND THAT BEST CREATION AFTER PROPHET (SALLALAHU ALAIHI WA SALLAM) IS ALI IBN ABU TALIB”.
admired al-Rida greatly,
Salam alaikum, I was browsing “Tareeh al-Khulafa” by Suyuti, and found interesting thing.
At page 289 (Darul Qalamul Arabi, Haleb – Syria) he says:
وفي سنة إحدى عشرة أمر المأمون بأن ينادي برئت الذمة ممن ذكر معاوية بخير وأن أفضل الخلق بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علي بن أبي طالب.
And in the year 11, al-Mamun ordered that it should be proclaimed: Protection rises from anyone who would mention Muawiyah with goodness, and that best creation after prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) is Ali ibn Abu Talib”.
How is possible for someone to claim that caliphs were prosunni and against shias? And if we would add to this his ideas regarding creation of Quran? Which are shared by modern rafidah and their greatest shuyukh?
