In the aqida of ahlus sunnah not wahabiyaa, it is permisable to use tawassul, Ie ask help from allah by saying something like ” Oh my lord grant me this for the sake of your beloved servant Imam ALi, etc etc ” This is fine ., but if one was to invoke sayyiduna ali direct believing he has a inherrent not atai ( given) ability to help this is shirk and even shia mujtahids admit to that
