Allah said in the Quran:

We had already, beforehand, taken the covenant of Adam, but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve.

Shia hadith scholar as-Saffar narrated in his “Basair ad-Darajat” (p 104):

Translation:

(Chain) from Abdullah ibn Sinan, that Abu Abdullah (alaihi salam) said about words of Allah – We had already, beforehand, taken the covenant of Adam regarding Muhammad, Ali, Hasan and Husayn and Imams from their progeny, but he forgot: and We found on his part no firm resolve. (Imam said): BY ALLAH THIS IS HOW IT WAS REVEALED!
